Introduction

The famous photograph "Afghan Girl" features Sharbat Gula, a refugee exiled from Afghanistan to Pakistan. Steve McCurry, a famous photographer, captured Gula through his camera when he traveled to Pakistan.

 

Steve McCurry began taking photographs for the National Geographic magazine in 1980. In 1985, McCurry became a photographer for National Geographic, he was worked mainly on features in South East Asia and Islamic countries.

 

"The Afghan Girls" quickly became an international sensation, everyone loved this photo. At the same time, McKerry's reputation also grew significantly among the photojournalism industry. The National Geographic magazine sold millions of copies of magazines, but only a little attention was paid to the girl. However, this photo also leads to a debate about the media exploiting audiences' compassion to attract their attention by promoting the suffering of individuals.
